Other Activities Benefit The Brain As Well
Upon finishing their foreign language course, 90% of what students learn goes out the window. With no practice in the language, a student would forget almost everything. Typically students who learn a foreign language don’t use it in a normal conversation. I know that I don’t, and it doesn’t seem beneficial to grind the hours studying the language just to forget it and not use it when you’re done. I understand and acknowledge the fact that learning a foreign language aids auditory skills, differentiating sounds, and language skills. Yet learning to play a musical instrument also grants these benefits, if not more. “These results reflect that children with music training . . . were more accurate at processing sounds” (Gersema, USC News). Musical instrument training also increases brain growth, accelerates reading skills, and betters language skills. The brain is open to new ideas and different concepts, and in most cases band is a more attractive class than Spanish or French, since it involves more participation and camaraderie.
