Should Schools Require Foreign Languages

I’m sure that in school, you’ve had to learn another language, such as Spanish, French, German, or Latin. In most school settings, students study from a grammar book, take tests, and generally never speak the language in everyday life. This is one of the worst ways to learn a subject, so why should they teach it at all? Schools should not require foreign languages because students are passive participants, there is no practical purpose for learning another language, and students may never actually use the language in a conversation setting. Before you close this window, accusing me of being “closed-minded,” I do understand that there are benefits, but it is so much work for so little gain.
