Proposed Solutions
Several things schools could do to make foreign languages not so boring anymore are: A) Having an immersion in x number of languages for x amount of time, then the student picks which one they’d like to learn B) Have foreign language be an optional class like band or chorus C) Do away with foreign language altogether. Options B and C probably do not sound attractive to schools, and Option A is better than just saying: “You’ll be learning Spanish for 3 years in a row. Period.” The school year is split into quarters, so Quarter 1 could be divided by the languages the school offers. This school, Lake Middle School,* offers Spanish, French, or Latin. The administration divides Quarter 1 into 3 parts. There are about 10 weeks in a quarter, so that leaves plus or minus 3 weeks immersed in that language in their foreign language classes. After the first quarter, the students decide which language they’d like to learn for the rest of the year. Students would pick a second and third option as well, to negate any outliers in the data. This way, schools could still require foreign language but could let students pick which one they’d like to learn.
*fictitious, any reference to a real school is totally coincidental
